Paulton Parish Council will be holding a WWI event this Saturday, 7th October at Paulton Junior School Hall.

The event includes a poignant performance by Paulton Amateur Dramatic Society, who will play out the story of the Pye and Stott family, while guests enjoy a WWI-themed buffet and glass of wine.

During the war, most families, and especially those on the front-line, only had access to rum or home-brewed beer, although some were lucky enough to have had French wine, which is what has been carefully selected for the event.

Every Year, the Pye family (like many other families at this time) have a photograph taken in the studio, and send copies to relatives. In 1914, this is a very special photograph, because John Pye, the son of the family, has volunteered to fight in France, and he has just been issued with his uniform.

Mrs Stott, his long-suffering wife, has her reservations about the impending war. During the following two years, the Pye family turn up for the annual photograph but, sadly, the family gets smaller. Eventually, in 1916, there is just a gathering of women – Mrs Stott has also been widowed and has taken over the photographic businesses. What is discovered, is that the war has imprisoned some women and liberated others. Nothing will ever be the same again.
