THE team at a locally owned and run opticians in Midsomer Norton is celebrating a colleague’s success during National Apprenticeship Week, February 9 to 15.

Leila Hamilton began working Saturdays and after school during her A-levels at Specsavers Midsomer Norton, and completed her optical assistant apprenticeship in October 2022.

Since then, she has progressed to become a clinical technician, and keen not to rest on her laurels, has recently completed an access course, achieving the highest grade on the programme. She has started an optometry degree at Plymouth University, supported by Specsavers’ Bright Stars initiative and the Early Talent team.

Leila said: “Starting out with a Saturday job at Specsavers gave me the confidence and experience I needed to take the next steps.

“I never imagined it would lead to an apprenticeship and a career in optometry, but the support I’ve had from the team has been amazing. I’m excited to see where this journey takes me.”

Specsavers Midsomer Norton store director, Matthew Watt said: “We’re passionate about encouraging the younger generation to consider optics as a potential career.

“A Saturday job or an apprenticeship is a fantastic way to dip your toe in the water and gain real-world work experience in a supportive environment.

‘It’s not just about earning extra money, it’s about learning to work as part of a team and developing communication and customer service skills that will stay with you for life.”

Specsavers offers a wide range of career paths, from retail and customer service to clinical roles in optics. With ongoing training and development opportunities, the stores are committed to investing in their teams and helping people progress.

He added: “Leila’s journey is a perfect example of how a weekend role and apprenticeship can lead to a rewarding career in optics - something we’re incredibly proud of helping her to do.”
