A special event is being held at Bath’s Guildhall on Friday, 8th March to celebrate International Women’s Day.
Hosted by the Chairwoman of Bath & North East Somerset Council, Councillor Karen Walker (Independent, Peasedown St John), the occasion will celebrate the contributions that local women have made to life in the community.
Cllr Karen Walker said: “Last year marked a huge milestone in the development of women’s rights here in the UK. We celebrated the centenary of the first women being given the opportunity to vote in British elections, with events taking place across the UK, including here, locally.
“Another year on, and the movement for women’s rights and full equality for both sexes could never have been stronger.”
The Celebration Afternoon runs from 2.30 p.m. – 4.30 p.m. at the Guildhall, and Cllr Walker has invited women from the across the district who have stood out for their contributions to civic life.
The theme is ‘Balance for Better’, which calls for a more balanced world with regards to gender equality.
Championing women’s rights has been a theme of the Chairwoman’s throughout her year in office. Last year, Cllr Walker and her Peasedown St John ward colleague, Cllr Sarah Bevan, were recognised by Amnesty International for their work in promoting the role of women throughout the area.
Cllr Bevan added: “For at least the last 100 years, women have worked tirelessly behind the scenes and led continuously from the front to make our community a better place. Cllr Walker and I certainly feel indebted to the women councillors that have gone before us. Their example is always something we seek to follow!”
