With news this week that Waitrose is trialling measures to reduce packaging by cutting plastics around flowers and plants, loose fruit and vegetables, and encouraging customers to bring their own containers in one of its stores, Farrington’s Farm Shop are trying to do their bit in our corner of the world!

Farrington’s has become a registered site to drop off your own Ecobrick. Wanting to help the oceans and the environment, and on a mission to reduce plastic usage, customers can now take part in the Ecobrick scheme at the local farm shop.

Ecobricking is a way of helping to stop non-recyclable plastics making their way into our oceans. Simply tightly pack all of your non-recyclable plastic into a plastic bottle, which will then be used to build things within the community. It is a movement that is spreading all over the world; hundreds of thousands of everyday people are turning to Ecobricking to take personal responsibility for their plastic and instead using the plastic in their communities.

Farrington’s will be continuously looking at all of the plastic that they use on site to see if it can be reduced where possible or use greener alternatives. This will be an on-going project that they hope to get better at.

A spokesperson for Farrington’s said: “We have had an outstanding response from our wider community, and have already had four trolley loads of Ecobricks dropped off at our site, after only launching it two weeks ago. It just goes to show how much people want to help the environment.

“Once we have enough, we will be inviting the community along to help us build. We will be using them to create raised flowerbeds to plant with lovely berries and herbs for our kitchens to use.”
