Norton Radstock Photographic Society members gathered at the Social Club on Thursday, 18th May for the final meeting before the summer break. Gatherings in the next few weeks, before the official break in July and August, will take the form of visits to interesting venues, and will include a practical session in Bath on candid street photography, led by Suzanne Ladd.

We were all saddened by the news this week of the death of a much-loved friend, George Iley. An active and long-standing member, George brought humour and a wealth of photographic skills and knowledge to the club.

He willingly gave practical support and encouragement to young and old, and always had an unusual ‘take’ on any competition focus. He will be greatly missed, and we extend our sympathies to his family at this time.

Earlier in the day, Suzanne Ladd and Jenny Short had visited Merchant’s House in Marlborough. A fascinating example of 16th century middle class living, the house offers a wealth of opportunities to photographers seeking unusual textures, historical artefacts and interesting interiors as subjects. Our committee is keen to plan a club outing to take advantage of the photographic taster session that the Merchant’s House Trust is offering.

The focus of the evening was May’s Open Digital Competition. Marko Dukta, a judge with a local reputation for incisive and informative feedback, did not disappoint! An expert in the subtleties of lighting, he stayed true to his belief that “sight is touch at a distance” and his comments were highly focused, constructive, but above all, personalised to the varying needs of members. He used his extensive knowledge to provide advice and examples, all of which were well received.

Jill Toman was again very successful, taking first place in both the mono and colour sections with her moody, almost ethereal, ‘Fishermen on Lake Inle’, and vibrant portrayal of a ‘Family on the Mandalay Express’. Second and third places in the mono competition were awarded to Graham Nicholls’ ‘Running for the Line’ and Bill Collett’s boldly graphic ‘Boat Lift’. ‘Burrowing Owl’ by Diana Reader and ‘Reflections’ by Janice Cauer achieved well deserved second and third places in the colour section.

Members will meet at the Cheese and Grain at 6.30 p.m. for their evening photoshoot in Frome on May 25th. Any non-members wanting a taster of the club will be made very welcome on the outing, and are encouraged to turn up and introduce themselves!
