Thank you to everyone who has submitted a photograph in the past few weeks to help supply Mystery Photographs for Radstock Museum’s future archives. If you would still like to enter, you can until 7th June. We will be notifying the winners shortly, who will be invited to a short presentation on Saturday, 29th June at Radstock Museum from 11 a.m. – 12 noon, where the winning photographs will be on display.
Last week’s photograph was of Clutton, with the photograph labelled G.F.S outing to Bath, 26th June 1912.
Well done to Les Box and Hannah Selway, Frankie Ford, Chris Lancaster, Richard Bailey, Eric Brain, Mike Ford, Martin Horler and Mark Warner, who all guessed correctly.
Thank you to Eric Brain, who says: “The photograph was taken by Miss Letty Collinson, of Clutton, just before WWI and is of the road junction of Northend with Station Road, with the Railway Inn (before the railway came through it was called the Serjeants Arms, but thereafter referred to by locals as ‘Blacker’s Inn’) to the right.
“The former Butcher’s shop and site of the old village pump is to the left, and the entrance to Batch Lane in the centre distance.
“The occasion is of the Clutton Ladies Circle, loaded up for an excursion to Bath. The then Rector’s wife, Gladys Mansfield, is third from the left with the large hat in the left hand cart.
“My most recent photo of the scene was taken in 1972 with just one parked car, not so easy to take the same photo today! However, the large sycamore tree still remains.”
So, if you think you can guess this week’s entry (top), and would like a mention, email: [email protected] or via Facebook or Twitter @MNRJournal. You can even send us a photograph of what the scene looks like today. Thanks, as ever, to Radstock Museum, who have been hugely supportive of this popular feature.
Don’t forget the ‘Memories over Elevenses’ event at the museum, which is held on the first Friday of the month from 10.30 a.m. until 12 noon, where visitors can bring old photographs, objects and documents and share your stories and knowledge with the team. Complementary tea, coffee and cakes are on offer – please bring along a friend, or make some new ones!
The next event is this Friday, 7th June.
