As ever, thank you to Somerset Coalfield Life for supplying last week’s Mystery Photograph of Midford.

Lucy Tudor explains the photograph: “This time it is of Midford and shows the Somerset and Dorset Railway line which travelled over the Midford Viaduct, seen in the photo...on its way from Bath’s Green Park Station to Bournemouth.

“The stations across our region were: Bath Green Park Station, Midford, Wellow, Shoscombe and Single Hill Halt, (Coal would be loaded onto freight trains at Writhlington Colliery Sidings situated between Single Hill and Radstock) Radstock North, Midsomer Norton South, Chilcompton, Binegar, Masbury Halt and Shepton Mallet (Charlton Road).

“The Midford Viaduct is also famous for appearing in the opening scenes of the 1953 film The Titfield Thunderbolt.”

Well done to everyone who guessed correctly: Colin Button, Dave Seddon, Katie Thayer, Richard Edwards, Eric Brain, Jonathan Griffin, Neil Gillard.

Many thanks to Jeff Parsons who told The Journal: “There are a number of possibilities as there were several viaducts along the S&D and the Camerton branch but my feeling for this one is Midford, with the S&D crossing the main road, a vague impression perhaps of some station buildings immediately off to the right of the viaduct and what could be the Hope and Anchor put just below the end of the viaduct.

“The rising ground behind also is indicative of this location.”
