Chilcompton Parish Council has stepped in to ask for residents’ views on the village skate park, with its future in doubt this week. The skate park, which cost around £30,000 and was built with funds raised by villagers, is under dispute by the Sports Committee, who say it is underused, whereas the Skate Park Committee say this is not the case. The Sports Committee, who lease the land from the Parish Council, want to remove the equipment and use the extra land for car parking.

Chairman of Chilcompton Parish Council, Jon Pike, said: “The Chilcompton Sports Committee has contacted the Parish Council, saying that the skate park in the sports ground area is not very well used and could possibly be better utilised as extra car parking. However, the Committee that runs the skate park is insisting that it is well used and that it would be a sad loss were it to be removed.

“So the Parish Council is hoping that residents will come forward to express their views. A third possibility is that it could be moved to the Old Rec play area in the lower part of the village.

“There are two other play area issues under consideration at the moment in the village. One is the Station Mead play area for small children, which is used more by older teenagers and often anti-socially. The Parish Council is investigating the possibility of getting it de-commissioned and residents’ views on this would also be appreciated.

“Meanwhile the Parish Council is seeking to obtain grants that would allow them to purchase teenage play/adult exercise equipment for the Old Rec ground.

Locals’ thoughts on this would also be welcomed.”
