AN organic farm and much-loved social enterprise that overlooks the Chew Valley Lake is at risk of closure unless it raises £50,000 through a new Crowdfunder campaign.
Launching on October 24, donations to the Community Farm’s campaign will help keep the gates open, benefitting thousands of people every year.
For 15 years, The Community Farm has been a haven for wildlife and people alike. Last year alone, the farm had more than 3,500 visits from a diverse range of people including school children, refugees, and adults with mental ill health. The farm also delivers organic food to more than 500 local homes every week.
Beneficiaries say the farm is a sanctuary for wellbeing and connection. As one volunteer put it: “I just need this place, as soon as I first came here and felt how relaxing and welcoming it was, I knew I had to keep coming.
“I need it, it calms me. It means so much to me already. It's a place where you can come and feel welcomed to just be yourself, whatever is going on for you that day.”
Another added: “Attending a wellbeing course at The Community Farm has given me a much-needed sense of connection - with others and with nature.
“I always leave feeling happy and resilient, and the sense of joy that I find there stays with me for days. Discovering the farm has been a gift and a turning point in my recovery from chronic illness. I feel so much gratitude to the land and for all the people who come together there to create a welcoming community. It’s a very special place.”
The space has also helped bring children from inner city’s out into nature.
Jo Ingleby, from The Children’s Kitchen, explained: "We brought children from inner-city Bristol out to the farm to spend a day picking, cooking and just being here in nature. Quite a lot of the children live in flats or high-rises and don’t spend much time outside. They come here and almost straight away they are playing happily.”
A sharp drop in grant funding means the farm is now facing a serious shortfall. Without urgent support, this community space could be lost.
Tom Richardson, co-managing director of the farm, said: “The Community Farm means so much to so many. We’ve transformed empty fields into a thriving landscape of organic crops, abundant wildlife, and inspiring spaces for people to connect with nature and each other. But right now, we need our community’s help.
“Whilst grant fundraising is tougher than ever, the need for nature-friendly farming and access to nutritious food has never been greater. Please do consider donating to our Crowdfunder. Every donation, big or small, helps us keep the gates open and this vital work alive.”
Supporters can donate and claim rewards including tickets to workshops and events, as well as exclusive offers from other local businesses. Every pound donated brings the farm closer to its £50,000 target.
