PLANS to close Newton House have been dropped, ensuring uninterrupted respite care for local families.
Labour councillors have welcomed confirmation that respite care at Newton House will continue after an earlier threat of closure.
The council has now committed to uninterrupted services, recognising Newton House’s vital role for adults with severe and complex impairments and their families.
This follows over a year of sustained work by Labour councillors Liz Hardman (Paulton) and Lesley Mansell (Radstock), alongside a highly active parents’ group.
Parent and campaigner Wendy Lucas of Radstock said: “It’s a fantastic outcome for all the families. It's a real illustration of what parent power can achieve if you don't give up. I'm so grateful for all the support from Liz and Lesley.”
Adult Social Care officers have been working with families to shape future respite provision, defining what high‑quality, person‑centred support should look like.
Richard Franklin, another parent said: “I’m absolutely over the moon with this news. Having somewhere you can trust to leave your loved ones is vital, and we must never lose this ever again.”
Using new flexibilities under the Procurement Act 2023, the Council plans to negotiate a new contract with Dimensions through a direct award, reflecting families’ wishes and protecting continuity of care.
Cllr Dave Biddleston (Keynsham South) who also supported families in this sustained campaign for local residents said: “Respite care is not a luxury, it is absolutely essential.”
Respite services like Newton House provide crucial breathing space and helps families stay well. Families were informed of the proposed approach in early January and have since met commissioners to discuss the details.
The council has confirmed there will be no gap in provision from October 1, guaranteeing continued support for all who rely on Newton House.
