The Wellow Group of the RDA, based at the Wellow Trekking Centre, needs more volunteers to help them continue their work with Riding for the Disabled.
The Riding for the Disabled Association is a voluntary organisation working with horses and ponies to promote opportunities for therapy and enjoyment for people with disabilities.
Supported by qualified and experienced instructors and teams of dedicated
volunteers, riders benefit from the activity, challenges and fun that horses bring.
Every year, thousands of people with disabilities discover through RDA just how much they can achieve, with many people referred by a medical professional, while others simply want to be able to enjoy riding in an environment they find supportive and welcoming.
The group try to help anyone who feels their activities are right for them and can cater for riders of all abilities, with no restrictions in terms of disability, there is always an appropriate level of activity that can take place.
The Wellow group of the RDA is based at the Wellow Trekking Centre, where they have been for over 25 years. Sessions are held during term time, Mondays to Fridays (excluding Wednesdays), catering for over 100 riders with ages ranging from pre-school to pensioners. Lessons are held in the indoor school and they also take riders for hacks along a disused railway line.
Volunteers help with getting the ponies ready and assist the riders with activities when riding. Every rider needs a leader and one or possibly two side helpers, so, in a session with four riders, there can be as many as twelve volunteer helpers and an instructor.
If anyone is able to help, more information is available on: 01225 840853 or via: www.wellow-rda.org.uk
Everyone is welcome, as knowledge is not as important as enthusiasm and training will be given, there is always a friendly face to help and guide you!
