Three local groups are to receive Community Grants from Midsomer Norton Town Council after a debate held at the June meeting on Monday.

Off the Record is set to receive £2,500, half of the money the young people’s counselling service requested. The money will be put towards establishing a brand new, local telephone counselling service for vulnerable young people in the area.

The Town Council’s Finance Working Party recommended that whilst it was a very worthwhile project, it was a large chunk of the yearly budget to give to a project that required on-going support and Councillors voted in favour.

SWALLOW was also awarded £1,000 to help fund a new horticulture group, but had bid for £2,800. Councillors decided that three previous grants had been given to the charity, but still wished to support their efforts.

Midsomer Norton Cricket Club is to receive £5,000 for their bid to replace their

ageing changing rooms. The FWP recommended the full amount be given as it is a one-off project that would benefit the community and the younger generation that the club is working so hard to support. The whole project is expected to cost around £90,000 and the club has been fundraising in aid of it.
