Earlier this year the local area was shocked to lose young fundraiser, Emma Welch, just days after completing a world record attempt to raise money for Brain Tumour Research.

Emma, who was fourteen, worked tirelessly challenging herself to a number of physical pursuits to raise money for the charity after her church minister, Andrew Stammers, was diagnosed with a brain tumour, despite her own health problems. Over the last few years, Emma cimbed the equivelant of Mount Everest, broke a World Record for holding the largest teddy bear picnic on top of Mount Snowdon and was nominated for a humanitarian award.

Now a group of knitters from Radstock have decided to comtinue her fundraising for Brain Tumour Research by breaking a world record of their own for the charity, clubbing together to crotchet 10,000 flowers.

Jenny Prowse, from Radstock Knitters, was a friend of Emma’s from their local church and is no stranger to fundraising herself. The Radstock Knitters regularly knit coats for homeless dogs, which are then donated to Mutts with Friends, a not for profit organisation based in Stanton Wick and take part in the annual campaign, the Big Knit.

This year, as well as preparing for a world record attempt, the team of ladies have been working on blankets for Bath Cats and Dogs Home, which they are donating on Saturday, 14th November, as well as working towards a target of 100 beanie hats for Innocent Smoothie bottles to support Age UK.

Jenny Prowse, from Radstock Knitters, said: “Following the sad death of my friend Emma Welch, I am hoping to continue raising funds for Brain Tumour research.

“On Saturday, 4th June 2016, the anniversary of Emma’s death, we will be trying to become record breakers by crouching 10,000 daisies.”

Jenny and her team need more crotcheters to contribute flowers to reach their target by next summer, if you would like to contribute a flower or two, please contact Jenny on 07963 250001 or by email on [email protected]

Should anyone want to donate beanie hats for the Big Knit campaign for Age UK, the deadline is 11th December.

Despite being busy donating blankets and making hats, Radstock Knitters are also creating decorations for Radstock’s Christmas Light Switch-on event in the town on December 5th.

The Radstock Knitters, meet regularly and welcome new members, even beginners.
