A D-Day veteran from Bath who survived his Allied ship being hit by a torpedo has enjoyed his 100th birthday party surrounded by his family and friends in Keynsham.

Stan Ford suffered a fractured spine and injuries to both legs on the day his ship HMS Fratton was sunk off the Normandy coast on August 18, 1944. Thirty-eight of the ship’s crew were rescued, however, 31 lost their lives.

Stan continues to dedicate himself to honouring the memory of those who served, including being appointed as an ambassador for the British Normandy Memorial in 2022.

A life-size banner of Stan has been created as part of the Standing With Giants project to celebrate this week’s national 80th anniversary of VE Day. The banner will be displayed at Bath & North East Somerset Council’s The Guildhall as a visual tribute to Stan’s heroism.

Stan celebrated his landmark birthday with his loved ones at Keynsham Masonic Hall on Saturday, May 3.

The party was also attended by B&NES Council leader Councillor Kevin Guy and chairwoman Councillor Karen Walker who presented Stan with a Bath Aqua Glass paperweight as a token to mark his life and achievements on behalf of the whole council.

Councillor Karen Walker (Independent, Peasedown) said: “A century of life is a truly remarkable achievement, filled with memories, wisdom, and experiences that have shaped the world. Stan’s journey stands as an inspiration to all of us.

“Congratulations on reaching the incredible milestone of 100 years and we hope your special day was filled with joy and reflection on all the wonderful moments you have enjoyed over the years.”

Councillor Kevin Guy added: “I am thrilled to have been part of Stan’s very special and unforgettable celebrations. You are an extraordinary man, Stan, and it has been an honour to wish you a happy birthday in person.”
