Last week’s Mystery Photograph proved popular, with many of you reminiscing over train journeys of the past.
Thank you to those of you who sent in your guesses of the Pines Express approaching Norton Hill Colliery and to David Shearn, for submitting it.
Well done to Paul Hancock, Jeff Parsons, Sid and Neil Johnson, Dave Curtis, Gary Dando, James Swift, Richard Edwards, Paul Kirkwood and Andy Savage.
Thank you to Jonathan Griffin who told The Journal: “This week we’re looking at the Somerset and Dorset railway with a double headed passenger train passing Norton Hill Colliery batch, heading towards Silver Street bridge and Midsomer Norton South station.
Reader Julian Sheppard sent a photo in to see if anyone could identify who else is in it with his father. This week, Meg Rodgers said: “I wonder whether the gentleman
second from the right of the picture is Stan Mears who was a member of The Midsomer Norton Accordion Band?”
Michael Gould thinks the young man second from the left in the front row was Bob Purnell. Julian added that he thinks that would make the photograph late ‘40s .
“Double heading was needed at the time to provide enough power to get the heavy trains up the 1 in 50 climb up to the highest point of the line at Masbury. When the train reached Evercreech Junction the pilot (front) engine would come off leaving the train engine to complete the journey unassisted to the south coast. The pilot engine would be turned round and wait at Evercreech to assist an ‘up’ train back to Bath.”
This week’s Mystery Photograph has again been submitted by a reader, many thanks to him – all will be revealed next week.
