BACK in July 2025 we wrote about an ambitious tree-planting project on the slopes of Dundry that was helping fulfil our vision of doubling tree cover in the area.
The extremes of weather in the summer caused losses of many trees and landowner Gavin Spittlehouse faced difficult challenges. Thankfully an exciting collaboration with 9Trees.org means replanting of lost trees can be achieved.
A new wave of community-led woodland creation is taking root as environmental non-profit 9Trees CIC brings together local volunteers, businesses and organisations create woodland in this case landowner Gavin’s Third Wood near Chew Magna. Building a resilient, biodiverse woodland overlooking Chew Valley Lake.
Third Wood is registered under the Woodland Carbon Code, which has required thoughtful discussion to create a solution so that trees sponsored & planted by 9Trees are not counted as verified carbon credits, whilst still ensuring most of the Land can still get the Woodland Carbon code
The project highlights a new collaborative model for woodland creation, bringing together landowners, and businesses while carefully managing carbon and biodiversity commitments.
Volunteer planting days have taken place throughout winter 2025 and will carry on into 2026 — the end of the season is fastly approaching, please get in contact with 9Trees asap if you want to get involved.
Bringing together people to plant native broadleaf trees including oak, hazel, hornbeam, alder and sweet chestnut. The site is already supported, due to 9Trees CIC, by Bristol-based businesses such as The Gallimaufry, Dryrobe, Warrens Office, Marriott Hotels, and others who fund and take part in hands-on planting days as partners of 9Trees UK.
Volunteer planting days are free and open to the public. Tasks include planting, mulching with recycled cardboard and woodchip, and helping restore soil health. There’s a shed for lunch, compost toilet on site, and views across the Chew Valley Lake.
