We had a great response to last week’s Mystery Photograph, with a few of you being able to tell us what you know about last week’s picture, Mells Park. Maybe you will be inspired by this week’s beautiful photograph, courtesy of Radstock Museum, and get in touch with your answers!

Well done to: Paul Hancock, Jeff Parsons, Graham Davis, Les Box and Hannah Selway, Eric Brain, Sally Bown, Frankie Ford and Pam Dukes. Apologies to anyone we might have missed!!

A few readers contacted us with some insightful comments about last week’s Mystery Photograph. Eric Brain told The Journal: “There cannot have been many more such houses as this imposing structure in the area covered by the Journal, already not covered, so my mind turned to Mells.

“Not the Manor, I have been there, but I have decided on Mells Park. I believe the existing house is a comparatively new structure, but am pretty certain this is the former house, which was destroyed by fire over 100 years ago.”

Pam Dukes said: “I think the Mystery Photo is of Mells Park.

“Thomas Hardy’s story ‘The First Countess of Wessex’ appears in his book A Group of Noble Dames, in which the Horner family appear as the Dornell family and Mells Park as Falls Park. It is believed that Hardy had a relative who came from Dorset to work on the Mells estate.”

A big thank you to Radstock Museum, who supplied this week’s photograph.
