Last week’s Mystery Photograph was sent in by John Griffith, who said: “I saw this photo posted on Facebook, I wondered if you would be able to work out where it was taken - I suppose somewhere up on the Mendips?”

Many thanks to everyone who wrote in to help John with the mystery! Here’s a selection of your brilliant replies:

Eric Brain, of Clutton said: “This week’s Mystery Picture is of Bathway crossroads at Chewton Mendip, taken from the bottom of Chapel Hill with Mr St John’s bakery and village PO behind the camera. I imagine, from the style of the Matchless motorcycle (the photographer’s?), that it was taken in late ’50s/early ’60s. The background has changed however with the wall of the old Priory set back to allow better visibility and form the current bus layby. It will be interesting to hear who the people in the picture are though.”

Vince Gill thought the photo is at a crossroads on the way to Wells.

Richard Edwards said: “I believe this photograph was taken at the staggered crossroads location known as Bathway, just a short distance south of Chewton Mendip on the A39. A very similar SCC signpost is still in situ at this location. A motorcycle enthusiast could no doubt reasonably date the photo but I’m guessing early 1950s?”

And Delwyn Dando, of Peasedown St John, emailed to say: “This week’s mystery photo is in the hamlet of Bathway on the Mendips, above the village of Chewton Mendip.” Les Box/Hannah Selway concurred, writing: “This week’s mystery photo is Bathway at Chewton Mendip.”

Lorraine Roberts, Dorset said: “The photograph is taken at Chewton Mendip, just in front of the old post office and where the local policeman lived.”

Among others to identify it were Ivor Davies, Tony Young, Phil Gibbs, Simon Chard, Jeff, Keith Moore, Dave Curtis, Neil Gillard, Andrew Matthews, Roy Barnes, Val Rogers, Wendy Simmons, Neil Johnson, Sid Johnson, Frankie Ford, Paul Hancock, Steve Hopton, Sue Bown, Brian Holder, Fay Swaffield.

Mike L wrote to say the signpost is still in the same place! And Mike Ford said it’s on the A39 just south of Chewton Mendip - the junction is on the edge of the Waldegrave Estate.

Big thanks for all your contributions. Can you identify this week’s Mystery Photo? If so, please get in touch -[email protected]
