Staff at the Connections Day Centre, in Writhlington, have been left reeling after their gated allotment was destroyed over Easter and many trees and plants stolen. No-one is sure how thieves were able to scale the barbed wire fence, with entire trees and a large amount of plants.
The allotment belongs to Colin Goode, the caretaker at the Connections Day Centre, which works as a model to help teach service users how to grow their own produce.
Apple and plum trees, as well as cabbages, were stolen, while potatoes, radishes, carrots and strawberry plants were destroyed. The plants were fenced in and gated, making the crime even more unusual. "This has really affected our service users, everyone is feeling very insecure," said Jeff Saffin, from Sirona.
The Connections Day Centre is now appealing for seeds, seedlings and small vegetable or fruit plants to be donated in the hope that they can restock and continue providing users with lessons in growing fruit and vegetables.
The allotment was destroyed on Monday, 22nd April. It has been reported to the police, so if any suspicious activity was witnessed around the Day Centre over the Easter Bank Holiday weekend, it is advised to call the non-emergency number, 101.
If you have any spare seedlings of cabbage, cauliflower, potatoes, carrots, onions, radish or other types of vegetable and small fruit plants that you would be happy to donate, they will be very gratefully received.
