Downside School, one of England's oldest and most distinguished Catholic schools, is celebrating a 100% pass rate in 21 of its 23 subjects, contributing to the Somerset school's overall 99.2% pass rate.

Downside School has done well in both the perceived 'harder' subjects, including maths, religious studies, history, German and Latin, with the A* grades particularly prevalent in maths and religious studies with 8A*s awarded in the subjects.

16% of students achieved straight A*s and As and 33% of students were awarded A*s and As.

Downside is an independent co-educational boarding school for pupils aged eleven to eighteen. It has built a reputation as an academically ambitious school where outstanding examination results are a priority and university offers are plentiful.

Dom Leo Maidlow Davis, Headmaster at Downside School, said: "These results are what we have worked and prayed for, but you're never quite sure until results day.

"We will continue to build on our students' success and I heartily congratulate the students and staff on these results."

Daniel Gibbons, Director of Studies, said: "This cohort has shown a significant improvement on their AS results; the implementation of our new Academic Improvement Plan is bearing fruit and I am delighted with the progress of these students."
