On September 13th Dunkerton WI met together at Tunley Recreation Centre.

The evening began with a few words about Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II who had been President of Sandringham WI and which she had attended every January since 1943.

It was interesting to learn that Her Majesty signed the minutes, presided over the business and introduced speakers just as is done at our meetings in Tunley. Following a minute of quiet reflection we sang the National Anthem.

The business started with a news of our informal meeting in August when we were happy to unveil the tree and plaque dedicated to Her Majesty to commemorate her Platinum Jubilee. Little did we know then that we would be mourning her death at our next get together.

Our outing to St Fagans on September 22nd was finalised as well as a trip to Alexandra Palace in October to attend the Knitting and Stitching Show.

The sports team unfortunately lost their most recent game of Skittles at Chew Stoke but look forward to their game of Darts in the competition final to be held in Coalpit Heath.

Following the business, we were very pleased to welcome author Dawn Lawrence who came to speak to us about the Born Free Foundation.

Dawn was able to illustrate so well the need for animals to be respected and ideally to live in their natural habitat. Her poetry was thoughtful as well as very amusing.

Following the close of the meeting we had tea, coffee and cakes baked by members.

Our harvest meeting is next on Tuesday 11th October at Tunley Recreation Centre starting at 7.15pm.
