This Saturday will see Midsomer Norton host a demonstration against school funding cuts, organised by Cllr Grant Johnson, local B&NES Councillor for Paulton.
The event hopes to gather as many signatures from local residents, to support an increase in funding for all schools across Bath & North East Somerset, that will be presented to the next meeting of Cabinet.
Cllr Johnson said: “It is so important that all our schools are properly funded, so that children are not being left behind.
“Pupils in North East Somerset have lost out since 2015, and even with the increase in funding for schools, it is still not enough.
“We also have to remember that it isn’t just our constituency that is suffering; this is a nationwide issue, and I really am concerned for future generations. In June, I attended a protest in Bath, but North East Somerset also has a voice that deserves to be heard.”
The NEU’s ‘Stop School Cuts’ campaign has recently said: “For 83% of schools in England, the crisis continues next year. We want every voter to know about the funding crisis and every candidate to pledge for adequate funding.
“As candidates begin to canvass their communities, it is up to us to make school cuts a doorstep issue. Now more than ever we need to challenge misinformation with the facts.”
Attending this Saturday’s demonstration is Labour’s Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for North East Somerset, Mark Huband. Mark will be setting out Labour’s vision for schools across the country, as well as North East Somerset. Cllr Johnson added: “Although organised by a Labour Councillor, this event is for all residents of all political persuasions to attend and show their support for increased school funding.”
The demonstration will be held in the High Street, outside McColl’s at 11 a.m. For more information, or to get involved, please email: [email protected]
