The Fire Service visited St Julian’s School in Wellow last week! Not because of a fire, thankfully, but to teach children the importance of fire safety.

Avon Fire & Rescue visit schools across the region on a regular basis so that staff and pupils can be made aware of the need to prevent fire risks.

In the UK, an average of 34 children under the age of eleven are killed in fires every year, and around 1,200 are injured. The Fire Service has a selection of educational packages tailored to different age groups and designed to deliver engaging safety messages.

Ruth Noall, Headteacher at St Julian’s School, said: “Having the firefighters visit the school taught our youngest children how to keep safe in the event of an emergency. The more that children are aware of what causes fire, and how to prevent it, the better!

“A fire engine also came to the school so children could see what it looks like inside and discover the huge amounts of equipment stored on board.”

Avon Fire and Rescue provide fire, water and road safety education to young people to help them stay safe. Their school visits deliver lessons about the dangers of playing with fire, open water and using the roads.
