Prior to 2012, Westfield Primary School had a total of seven different Headteachers over ten years. The progress measures for Key Stage 2 had put the school into the bottom 5% nationally and the school size was around 330. Since then, there have been significant changes and year on year improvements, with attainment rising to above national averages.

The school has now grown to over 430, with Reception classes full in 2017. Westfield also has its own highly successful nursery, which is a contributing factor to improving standards of children on entry.

There has been significant investment in the school buildings and areas such as IT infrastructure, with many classes now having iPads at their disposal and interactive boards in the classrooms. The school is organised into three phases to ensure pupils’ transition across Key Stages is smooth and consistent and the school has a very popular Breakfast and After School Club.

In 2018, the school scored exceptionally well in maths, recording 90 per cent against a national average of 76 per cent. English reading was ahead of the average at 83 per cent (75 per cent nationally) and writing was 81% compared to 78% nationally. Progress scores for reading and maths, measuring improvement over Key Stage 2, easily put Westfield into the top 10% of schools across the country and the top 18% for writing.

Westfield was more notably one of the top four performing schools in B&NES, including results for disadvantaged pupils.

Headteacher, Simon Mills, says: “We are immensely proud of the standards our children are now achieving; the resilience and determination with which they approach their day-to-day work is incredibly impressive and the children consistently excel themselves.

“One of the key factors in contributing to the school’s successful ethos and happy atmosphere is the broad and varied curriculum on offer to the children, including enrichment afternoons for years 3 to 6 each Friday; Schools Without Walls, a five week learning residency in partnership with the Egg theatre, Bath, and the annual Fantastic Futures event, inspiring children for later careers with the help of both national and local businesses.

“Bearing this in mind, a huge thank you must go to the teachers and support staff for their relentless drive to improve outcomes for our children and Westfield School!”
