Year 6 at Longvernal were lucky enough to visit Writhlington School’s fabulous theatre to experience a professional musician giving a demonstration of a huge array of percussion instruments. Beau, one of the year sixes said: “It was very energetic and sometimes extremely loud!”

Instruments ranged from huge timpani drums, with their strange but pleasing tuning pedals; the crisp snare drum, ideal for marching; the huge gong; which we learned had been used in making horror films and some tuned percussion like a marimba. Another of the students, Hadley, said, “I thought it was fascinating to have a look at some instruments that we haven’t seen before.”

Jess Collins, Music Coordinator, said: Longvernal received the Music Mark Award last academic year and we are always seeking opportunities to inspire children’s musical interest and explore creativity.

This was certainly the case at this workshop, and this year 6 class left inspired to pick up a pair of sticks or beaters in the future to make their own music using percussion.
