Fosse Way, the acclaimed special school in Radstock, has achieved the highest accolade possible following a recent OfSTED inspection of its residential provision: a judgement of outstanding in every inspection category!

In a detailed 13-page report, Lead Social Care Inspector, Wendy Anderson, concludes that the quality of care and support in the school’s residential accommodation, the leadership and management of the provision, as well as the protection provided to pupils are all worthy of the highest judgement attainable.

Fosse Way’s residential area, known as Fosse Way House, provides on-site accommodation from Monday to Friday for up to eleven of the school’s 198 pupils. An innovative 24-hour curriculum has been devised for the young residents that enriches their lives through enabling them to develop new skills, as well as participate in the local community.

During the three day inspection, for which Fosse Way was given two hours’ notice, the inspector received feedback from a number of parents who responded with great enthusiasm about Fosse Way House. Parents and carers have often been astounded by the obstacles their children have overcome and the new skills they have developed.

The inspector was also most impressed by the drive and dedication of those that work in Fosse Way House in constantly seeking ways to enhance their service to pupils, noting “a strong sense of commitment to continuous improvement of the service provided.”

Elsewhere in the report, the inspector highlights the willingness of Fosse Way House staff to go “above and beyond” what is expected of them to ensure pupils settle in as well as possible when first becoming residents. This often includes working during the summer holidays to make sure that both parents and pupils are fully prepared for transition to life on the school premises. In relation to this, one parent commented: “The staff team’s sensitive, gentle and caring approach has allayed any fears we had about our child coming to board at the school.”

In concluding her glowing report, Wendy Anderson writes: “It is this drive, planning and determination to do better for young people which enables the school to maintain its outstanding judgement.”
