MP for North East Somerset, Jacob Rees-Mogg, visited Norton Hill School in Midsomer Norton, last Friday, 9th September to hear about the work some of the students have been doing on the ‘Send My Friend to School’ campaign.
Last year, a group of Year 8 students from Norton Hill’s Mendip House decided they wanted to raise awareness about the 37 million children worldwide that are not receiving an education due to wars and natural disasters.
With the help of theirtutors, Mrs Thompson and Mrs Bates, they produced an assembly for the rest of Mendip House and resources to raise awareness of the
campaign. Also inviting, as the campaign suggests, their local MP to receive the resources and present them to the Prime Minister. This is to encourage the Government, along with other governments worldwide, to fund the £3 billion it would take to educate these children.
Mr Rees-Mogg agreed and was met by Mr Ugarow, Head of Mendip and Mr Green, Deputy Head. He watchedthe original assembly the students, who have now started Year 9, produced and spoke to the students of Mendip House about the
campaign and democracy in general. He finished by opening up the floor for a quick question and answer session.
A spokesperson for Norton Hill School said: “It was an excellent experience for Mendip House students and we thank Mr Rees-Mogg for finding the time to visit Norton Hill School and carry our messages to the Prime Minister.”
