From 21st – 27th August, Somervale School became host for N’Fest, a free activities week organised by Welton Church for children and parents alike.

Clare Green, a member of Welton Baptist Church and a spokesperson for the event, said: “We have around fifty volunteers – people from the church take weeks off work to help us put this on, and we had 240 children between the ages of four and eleven booked in for the morning club, which is every Friday, 10 a.m. to 12 noon. Mums can just drop their kids off, or come in and have a coffee if they want.”

The event incorporated live music performed by the church pastors, volunteers and the children, as well as comedy skits, fun and messy games, team-building exercises and more. The theme this year was ‘outer space’, with many of the children opting to arrive in hand-made spacesuits, largely consisting of tin-foil.

Throughout the week, the group arranged a number of other activities for parents to bring their children along to, and to get involved with themselves. Highlights of the week included: Lighthouse Live, the Welton Baptist Church in-house drama group, who performed a number of sketches, including classics by the Two Ronnies, for the children; an afternoon family film and indoor-picnic; an evening team-quiz night; and a BBQ and men’s six-a-side football tournament for fourteen year-olds and above.

Other events included a ‘girly movie night’, where Sharon Gavron’s 2015 film, Suffragette was shown, and an afternoon cream tea for the over-60s, where musical entertainment was provided by some of the group’s teenage members.

Clare continued: “Every year, for the last ten years or more, we’ve put the N’Fest event on. We find that towards the end of the summer, children are getting bored – they’ve done everything throughout the summer already. This is a free event for the community, where we can just share the love.”
