WE INVITED Rose Atkinson once again as a judge; this time for our April Open Print Competition, writes Jenny Short.

Well known locally for her creative approaches to Intentional Camera Movement and the use of vintage lenses with modern cameras, Rose has made a name for herself by developing an unique style of photography, whilst retaining a deep understanding of the art and an engaging manner when talking to groups.

This shone through the quality of the feedback we have come to expect and her giving generously of her time and her expertise.

She considered each image at length on its own merits, considering the choice of title, composition, colour balance and overall impact and was intrigued by the storytelling aspects, yet comments sensitively on the nuances of abstractions as well as the choice of crop and quality and impact of the mounts.

Whilst there were fewer Mono entries than usual, Rose was impressed by the quality on display.

New member Helen Wehner was Commended for her Mono print “Street Art Meets Street Smart”, while two more abstract offerings were Highly Commended: Jill Toman’s “Light and Shadows” and Pamela Bruce-Lockhart’s “On a Mission”.

Jill took third place with her engaging portrait “Charlotte”, and Pamela second with “Mind your own Business”. Overall Mono print section winner was David Bathard with the subtle rendering of “Morning Light”.

In the Colour section Jill Toman was Commended for “Abandoned to the Sand” and Highly Commended for “Milky Way in Namibia” as well as being awarded second place for “A Roof Apart”. Diana Walker was Highly Commended for her “Eagle Owl in Flight” and was the overall winner in the section with “Harvest Mice”.
