Bath and North East Somerset Council announced the expansion of the Bath e-scooter trial to cover the University of Bath’s Claverton Down campus.

The third phase of the e-scooter trial covers eight square miles to allow people to take short journeys around the city. It is proving especially useful for commuters and students alike.

The trial will help improve air quality and reduce carbon emissions as B&NES Council aims to reach its target of being net-zero by 2030.

Transport accounts for 29% of carbon emissions in Bath so initiatives such as this one take the Council closer towards that goal.

Studies of other, similar schemes in the country provide promising data that e-scooters will have a significant impact in creating more green travel. In Essex, an e-scooter trial led participants to cut their car or taxi usage by 31%. 82% of users opted for a ride on an e-scooter instead of driving alone at least once.

Bath MP Wera Hobhouse commented: “Reducing transport emissions needs to be one of the fundamental pillars of our net-zero policy. This can be particularly enhanced by initiatives from local authorities and B&NES Council are a shining example of what can be achieved when this is recognised.

“The ongoing e-scooter trial in Bath gives commuters and students alternative methods of transport that will help unclog our roads and make sure the air we all breathe is safer. It is in keeping with B&NES Council’s nationally leading efforts to decarbonise our city and provide a better, greener future for everyone.”
