A friendly group of local footballers are falling back in love with the beautiful game, albeit at a slower pace. The new pay-as-you-play walking football sessions, which kicked off in December at the home of Welton Rovers Football Club, West Clewes, are proving to be a great success.
Every Thursday, from 12 noon – 1 p.m. over-fifties in the area are invited to come along and give the sport a go.
Walking Football is becoming one of the UK’s fastest growing sports for this age range and is the same as the speeded-up version of the sport – with one rule – no running is allowed! It is ideal for those looking to get back into fitness, recovering from injury, or who just want to have some fun with others.
The idea of slowing football down has been so popular that the model is being adapted, with frame football groups being set up in the county for those with conditions such as cystic fibrosis.
The sessions have been organised by Age UK B&NES and run by coaches from Inclusive Sport and Fitness, who already run popular sessions in the area. The weekly events are sociable and relaxed, just turn up on the day, wearing sensible clothing and football boots if you have them.
One of Welton’s participants, Bob Denning, was proudly wearing boots that he had not put on for 41 years. With a little bit of TLC, Bob had managed to bring his boots back to life and said they were making him feel 41 years younger!
