Midsomer Norton High Street’s meandering River Somer has had some surprising wildlife over the years – we are sure readers will remember the ill-fated otter, and most recently, an elusive Dipper.

Thanks to reader, Gillian Hipwood, who has been in touch to say she spotted a Dipper in Midsomer Norton on 9th January. With the clue in the name, Dippers are known for their bobbing or dipping movements, and can also use their wings underwater. They feed on insect larvae and freshwater shrimps and have declined in some areas, including the South West, since the 1970s.

Dippers are protected by the Wildlife and Countryside Act.
