The High Sheriff of Somerset recently paid a special visit to the Somerset-based educational charity Sound Vision CIO and local radio station Somer Valley FM. The two organisations work in partnership and share premises next to Somervale School in Midsomer Norton.

The High Sheriff contributes to the wellbeing of the residents in the county they serve. Rob Beckley was appointed High Sheriff of Somerset on the 17th of March and will serve in the role for a year. Rob’s latest role follows on from a 38 year policing career, during which time he was the recipient of the Queen's Police Medal for distinguished service.

The High Sheriff requested to visit both Sound Vision and Somer Valley FM after hearing about the charity’s work. As well as seeing for himself the impact that both organisations have on community life, Rob was keen to see how the charity works in tandem with the radio station. He has a strong passion for radio having seen it’s impact when he presented a series for BBC Radio about contemporary policing. From his background of police service, Rob understands the importance of preventative interventions which is central to the impact of Sound Vision.

During his visit, Rob was interviewed by post-16 Fosseway student, Mark. He commented: “Mark did a masterful job in quizzing me about my role as well as exploring matters that he was curious about. Once again I have the privilege of observing some fascinating and inspiring work with young people in Somerset.”

Working with Fosseway School, Sound Vision are helping post-16 students get ‘work ready’. The two have been working together since the charity began seven years ago.

Dom Chambers, CEO of Sound Vision said: “I am really proud of Mark for responding like a radio professional to my suggestion that he interview the High Sheriff. What resulted is a compelling conversation that we will air on the Sound Vision show on Somer Valley FM later this month.”

The team at Sound Vision and Somer Valley FM wish Rob well with the rest of his year as High Sheriff. Dom added: “It was fantastic to welcome the High Sheriff to both the charity and the radio station. I am really grateful to Rob for asking to come and see for himself how we impact the opportunities of young people, some of whom are facing challenging lives. It was great to share our mutual passion for radio. We hope to see him again soon”.
