Weeks of creative workshops saw hundreds of people come together last Saturday evening to celebrate ‘Light the Night’, an outdoor community arts event and Lantern Parade produced by DNA arts.

Almost 200 illuminated moth and lightbulb lanterns were created by local people in the weeks prior to the event, with over 500 taking part in the parade which processed from Victoria Hall through the town centre to St Nicholas’ Church field.

People were treated to live music from Tim Hill’s Walking Street Jazz Band and performance animated by Desperate Men and Natural Theatre Company and the large puppets, whose illuminations were a great spectacle on the dark evening.

On arrival at St Nicholas’ Church field, the audience were welcomed into the fire-lit display, marvelled at the fire brazier and pumpkin display created by members of the community and enjoyed music by local musicians, Jacquelyn Bevan, Azhaar, Georgia Mann and Zoe Pollard.

DNA arts spokesperson, Chloe Edgell, said: “For the second year in a row, we would like to thank the hundreds of people who helped make this magical event happen in Radstock.

“The event is a unique celebration of Radstock’s past, present and future and is inspired and shaped by the imagination and creativity of local people.

“Light the Night is a wonderful example of what can be created when Radstock comes together and long may it continue.”

Audience member, Ruth Wilkinson, said: “Thanks to all involved for creating such an engaging and creative community event.”

The puppets which led the parade will perform again this weekend as DNA arts lead a second parade to Bath City Farm’s annual bonfire night on Saturday, 5th November. All are welcome to join the parade, which meets outside St Barnabas Church in Southdown at 6 p.m. The puppets will also be part of this year’s Church Road parade (2nd December) and Bedminster Lantern Parade in Bristol.

Light the Night was funded by Bath and North East Somerset Council, Arts Council England, Radstock and Westfield Big Local and the Radstock Co-operative Society.
