Wednesday, 17th July saw South West in Bloom judges, Terry Porter and Richard Taylor, visit both Paulton and Radstock's In Bloom teams, who welcomed the judges, with presentations, tea and tours around their neighbourhoods. The results will be released in September, good luck to both entrants!

The judges were surprised to be greeted with the ringing of church bells and a sermon from John Wesley (played by Andy Cunningham), when they arrived in Paulton, who informed them that the 'Flame kindled on 6th September 1780, continues to burn and that Paulton people are alive with this flame'. The theme of flames was Paulton's choice for the colours of their flowers and shrubs. Gail Garlick, of Pride in Paulton Partnership, said: "Getting Paulton ready for the South West In Bloom competition was really good fun, but it was a lot of hard work. We're really grateful for all the effort by the PiPP team. It was fantastic that so many different groups in Paulton came together."

On behalf of PiPP, Becky Parker presented the judges with a selection of images, detailing the journey made since last year to improve Paulton's environment. Becky said: "In 2012, we took our first stumbling steps, tidying around the borders, digging and preparing and laying the foundations for the future. In 2013, we were on fire!"

Despite reduced resources available from Radstock Town Council and B&NES and the challenge of the late spring and the constant watering necessary in the present hot weather, the committee is proud of the splendid arrangements in the beds, the stunning baskets, tubs and coal trucks, the multiple skills on display at Connections Day Centre, St Mary's CE Primary School and Writhlington Orchid Project and School and the sensitive heritage and environmental work done at Haydon and Clandown. The committee is indebted to Radstock Museum, for hosting the launch of the judging route as the current exhibition, 'The Children of the Mines' fits so well with the In Bloom theme, 'Forty years on from the Closing of the Mines.' The Secretary, Eleanor Jackson, is grateful to all who took up the challenge to produce a fitting tribute to all who worked in the mines, "The mining families gave Radstock its strength and sense of community and we owe it to them to remember this as we build for the future."
