Members of Midsomer Norton and Radstock Inner Wheel Club welcomed Susan Marshfield MBE as this month meeting speaker.

Susan was born in Rushden, Northamptonshire, in 1932 and moved with parents to Devon when she was 15.

After marrying Jack in 1960 she made the leap to Bristol, where she went to work for John Harvey’s, the Famous wine merchant.

Later they moved to Winterbourne where she became a District Councillor and subsequently a County Councillor and became very active in the community and as Chair of the local Technical College which specialised in engineering, motor vehicles and secretarial training, she also became active in the Women’s Institute, locally then in Gloucestershire, followed by Avon, The County Federation and National Committee.

During this time, she discovered “speaking in public” and became a strong supporter of the charity BRACE which funded research into all types of dementia, but at that time Alzheimer’s in particular.

After the death of her husband Jack, Susan gave up representation work and found a job working for the Bristol Chamber of Commerce, which led to her escorting two visits to the Caribbean.

At 63, Susan become a regular “speaker” and travelled extensively around the country and was awarded the MBE for her work in the community. Now at 91-years-old, Susan is just starting to “take things a little easier”.

Members found her the talk extremely amusing, with much laughter and applause.
