Road safety in Radstock Town Centre caused a Councillor debate at last week’s monthly meeting.

B&NES Alderman and local resident, Terry Reakes, addressed Radstock Town Council on Monday evening, expressing his concern for local pedestrians.

He said: “I believe the pedestrian crossing system in Radstock centre is inadequate and measures should be taken without undue haste to rectify the situation, particularly in Nelson Ward Drive, Church Street, and Fortescue Road, where there are no pedestrian crossings.

“The pedestrian crossing in The Street should be updated to a Puffin crossing; incidentally, the traffic signs and road mark- ings for indicating this crossing leave a lot to be desired, as do much of the road markings in the centre.

“I would ask the Town Council to write to Bath & North East Somerset Council, requesting a reassessment of the pedestrian layout in the centre, so improved safety measures are instigated.”

Councillors discussed a 20 mph limit on Frome Hill and a number of issues with the new layout and roundabouts in the town. There was also a debate about the illusion of safety with crossings, and if residents were not taking enough care as a result. A lack of enforcement was also noted, and restrictions on parking locally.

A proposal was made to schedule a meeting with B&NES Council, local police and town traders to put together a ‘coherent’ package to address the problem. All Councillors present voted in favour.
