Fundraising evening at Camerton

Dear Editor,

A successful community fundraising evening in Camerton has raised £2,000 in support of cancer services at the Royal United Hospital, Bath.

The event, held at Camerton Community Hall, attracted more than 120 guests for what organisers described as a “fantastic evening “of entertainment.

The fundraiser was organised by Bryn and Teresa Hawkins, who have long supported the RUH Cancer Unit. The couple previously presented a donation following a Big Band fundraising event held at the same venue last year.

This years event received significant backing from the Somerset Miners Welfare Trust, Janet and Mike Collins whose support proved vital in achieving the impressive fundraising total.

The contribution from sponsors played a crucial role in the evening’s success.

Entertainment was provided by Martin Cox, an acclaimed Elton John tribute performer who tours extensively across the UK and internationally, including on cruise ships and recently a tour of a part of Australia.

“We could not have raised the amount without the support of the Somerset Miners Welfare Trust,” said Mr Hawkins. “Martins generosity also made a huge difference and helped us reach this tremendous total.”

Funds raised will support to RUH Cancer Unit, current campaign to replace superficial radiotherapy equipment, which is used in the treatment of many skin cancer patients.

Bath Cancer Unit Support Group welcomed the donation at the presentation at the Dyson Cancer Unit, RUH, Bath.

Organisers thanked everyone who attended, donated, or supported the event, describing the evening as another example of the generosity of local people.

Will Aldi be built?

Dear Editor,

IT will be interesting to see if Aldi do develop the old Welton Bibby and Baron site. B&NES council in their infinite wisdom came up with a number of excuses as to why the Somer Valley Enterprise Zone could not be put there but had to be put on agricultural land.

The Welton site would have served well for SVEZ as most of the existing buildings could have been used with only internal alterations needed. I cannot see that a giant supermarket there will do any good for Midsomer Norton high street. Could be another kick on the teeth like the parking charges.

On the SVEZ subject, how long before an application for a change of use for the land goes in and we get yet another unwanted housing estate? Probably just after the farm land is compulsory purchased st a knock down price.

Funds raised through generosity

Dear Editor,

RECENTLY, a plant sale was held at Trinity Methodist Church, Westfield, in aid of Brain Tumour Research.

Brain Tumours are the prime cause of death in children and people under 40 in the UK but research only receives one per cent of NHS Funding.

It is my pleasure to report that the sum of £430 was raised through the generosity of all involved in this lively church community. Thank you all!

Yours sincerely,

Juliet Moore, via email

Concert for Jim

Dear Editor,

THE concert last Saturday, May 9, at Chilcompton Village Hall to celebrate the life of Jim Edwards was a great success.

All monies raised for the Stroke Association, the grand sum is £600.

A massive thank you to all who took part to make this such a memorable event, Jim would have been very proud.

A sell out that started with the Singing Guitars doing what they do best entertaining the audience, several solo items were included all to a very high standard and rapturously received.

The highlight of the show was JP 7 a female singing group who sang with harmony you expect from a high class professional group, just seven and what a sound they made.

After tea coffee and lovely homemade cakes at the interval Dave Stock entertained the audience with his guitar, such a star.

Then 'Crazy for Uke' our local Ukulele band played several humorous numbers including 'My Old Man’s a Dustman' a Lonnie Donegan favourite and finished with Putting on the style.

The concert finished with the coming together of everyone to sing Country Roads.

A special thank you to Charmain who put the concert together and liaised with the groups to fine tune the contents for the concert. Thanks to the ladies in the kitchen for the tea and cakes and to all who donated money or raffle prizes (there were many) and to those who helped in any way to make this such a success.
