As someone who comes from Scarborough, North Yorks, I have reservations about the Prime Minister, given that she claims Northern origins, but actually is a family friend of my Watford cousin. There is nothing wrong with being born in Oxford or coming from Watford while the secondary school she attended in Leeds, which she claims let her down, is actually high-performing in every way.
Her semi-detached approach to reality worries me. I think the problem is that she is driven by ideology, not the Harold Wilson Yorkshire pragmatism and progressiveness, which kept us out of the Vietnam war and de-criminalised homosexuality. The trouble is that all politicians are affected by public concern about standards in public life, and it is getting harder to find candidates to stand in the local elections in May 2023. Parish councils are a world away from Westminster, but I really believe that Westfield Parish Council is making a difference to residents’ lives for the better, and Radstock is working hard to reverse negative trends in former years.
These are my personal views. Labour will do its best both to hold the Conservative national government to account and the local Lib. Dem administration, and I think it would be a consensus among us that Liz Truss will make it much easier for us to win the next national election. We just hope she does not do too much damage to the country before that.
And please would she help us get the buses back on the roads. Nationalising the railways would be a good idea, too.
Yours sincerely
Eleanor M Jackson (Cllr)
(Lab. Westfield)
The above are my personal views and aspirations, though consistent with Labour party policy.
