Liz Truss, UK Prime Minister and Leader of the Conservative Party announced earlier today that she will be resigning. Speaking in front of Number 10 Downing Street just past 1pm, Truss said “I came into office at a time of great economic and international instability... I recognise, though, given the situation, I cannot deliver the mandate on which I was elected by the Conservative Party.

“I have therefore spoken to His Majesty the King, to notify him that I am resigning as leader of the Conservative Party.”

Truss’ resignation means she will be the shortest serving PM in British history with only forty four full days in her role as PM.

Reacting to the announcement, Metro Mayor Dan Norris said: “Liz Truss has made the right decision. But the damage she has caused will take years to fix.

“As Metro Mayor, the record inflation we are seeing means I am losing spending power every single day. Changing the Chancellor, the Home Secretary and now the Prime Minister still just doesn’t cut it. We need a general election as soon as possible and to stop being seen as a banana republic and the basket case of Europe”.
