It has been announced this week that from September, residents of the Somer Valley will be able to watch live relays from the National Theatre at Midsomer Norton Town Hall. The town is embracing the latest digital broadcast technology, offering local residents cutting edge drama on their doorsteps in what is being launched as the Assembly Room Theatre (ART).
The first performance will be Euripides' powerful tragedy, MEDEA – directed by Carrie Cracknell, in a new version by Ben Power, at 7 p.m. on Thursday, 4th September in the Assembly Room. This production sees Helen McCrory return to the National Theatre to take the title role; the cast also includes Michaela Coel, Danny Sapani and Cath Whitefield.
Medea is a wife and a mother. For the sake of her husband, Jason, she has left her home and borne two sons in exile. But when he abandons his family for a new life, Medea faces banishment and separation from her children. Cornered, she begs for one day's grace. It's time enough. She exacts an appalling revenge and destroys everything she holds dear.
The play will be beamed live from the National Theatre in London, onto the large cinema screen at the Town Hall, with full digital projection and surround sound, comfortable cinema seats and refreshments. All that will be missing is the view of the London skyline! For details, please visit: http://www.midsomer">www.midsomer nortoncommunitytrust.co.uk or ring: 01761 419133.
