NEW for this year’s Mid Somerset Show was a champion of champions trophy, a fabulous gold cup with a solid gold Babycham on it’s lid.

This trophy was awarded to the preferred champion from the judging panel of Mark Bagwell, show president and Leta Showering, from the wonderful array of champions which included a Shetland pony, sheep, cattle all great examples of their types. There have been few shows this season with such quality of stock in depth as there was at the Mid Somerset Show.

The animals were well behaved standing in the heat of the day as the judges carefully inspected the range of animals, cattle, sheep and horses all wonderful examples from their sections of the show and their final decision was the handsome in hand shire filly, Radford Cilla, a home bred, shown by Colin Horler of Radford, near Paulton, who has had a good season and qualified for the horse of the year show, not for the first time.

In the Any Other Dual Purpose Breed championship Andrew Tanner of Winford was reserve champion with his Somerset Sheeted Tanglenold Iris. This is a breed which became extinct and through careful research and genetics, has been recreated.

Amongst the sheep champions were Roger Lyons of West Harptree winning both the Locals and the Butchers lambs.

Harriet Bown of Binegar won the Black Welsh Mountain championship, she has now built her flock up to 30 ewes whilst also working full time.

A terrific show, a great day out and plenty of retail together with fun fair, vintage tractors and classic cars.

The president had a terrific day, there is so much to do and see, and was amazed at the amount of work the volunteers put into making the show. Show chairman Graham Walton thanked all the sponsors for their continued support.
