After 82 years, the Midsomer Norton and Radstock Chamber of Commerce is looking to reinvent itself by developing a business membership across the whole of the Somer Valley area.
At its AGM last week, members considered how the Chamber could move forward from the current structure to one which would allow a dual focus. Firstly, creating a voice for business on key issues such as transport and infrastructure, whilst secondly, continuing to fulfil the traditional, community-based role through specific town centre working groups.
"The message was clear, our members wanted to see their Chamber offering a much more strategic business voice and working together to tackle issues. To acknowledge this fundamental change, members began by voting unanimously to rename the organisation to the 'Somer Valley Chamber of Commerce' – operating as a hub for the business community across the whole Somer Valley. In the coming months, the current Chamber board will be bringing together business leaders to take the Chamber forward with its new and exciting vision," said Tina Veater, Chair of the Chamber.
One idea being discussed is a survey of businesses to identify key issues facing the business community in the Somer Valley, along with links with the local towns and parishes, the Somer Valley Forum and B&NES as the unitary authority. The Chamber is taking a broad definition of the term Somer Valley, based on a core area, including Midsomer Norton, Farrington Gurney, High Littleton, Timsbury, Camerton, Peasedown St John, Shoscombe, Radstock and Westfield, plus any other businesses who want to be involved, as the aim is to be inclusive and work together.
Whilst further details will be released in the coming months, in the meantime, anyone interested in joining this new initiative in the Somer Valley can receive a membership pack and find out more by contacting Tina Veater on: 01761 410141.
