With most couples their age probably thinking about taking life a little bit easier, Terry and Caroline Wynne MBE, from Paulton Hospital's League of Friends Charity Shop, are an exception to the rule. On hearing of the retirement and subsequent closure of Bruce's Bikes, a much bigger premises next door, the couple decided it was too good an opportunity to miss and plans were made for their big move.

Officially opening the new shop on Monday this week, the couple were joined by B&NES Chairman, Cllr Rob Appleyard, Paulton Councillors and Parish Councillors, friends and volunteers to celebrate.

Despite only moving next door, the task has been a mammoth one, with the project underway since the beginning of the year to convert the shop for their needs, with volunteers and local companies all pitching in to make it happen.

Terry and Caroline, who received the MBE in 2011 for their charitable work, had been at the previous shop for fourteen years, making over £350,000 for Paulton Hospital, alongside their loyal band of volunteers – a truly staggering amount.

So, rather than retiring, the couple are looking forward to the future at their new premises, a large, open space, which can show off all of their charitable goods to the full. It is also much more accessible, with room outside for loading and unloading, meaning the shop will be accepting small items of furniture from now on.

"We are so proud of the charity shop, for Paulton Hospital and our community," said Terry Wynne. "We would like to thank everyone who helped to make this possible – Carpets and Fabrics Direct, Wellington Signs and Designs, Mr and Mrs Preece, for their hot water system and fridge, given to us free of charge for the shop's kitchen, and to all of our volunteers, who worked through the very cold weather – thank you all so very much.

"We are always looking for small furniture items, toys and paperback books. So, please come along and support your local hospital."

Officially opening the new premises, B&NES Council Chairman, Rob Appleyard, said: "Fourteen years ago, Terry and Caroline made the brave step of taking on a charity shop and have been supporting the work of Paulton Hospital ever since. It is not only their drive and determination that means we are here today, but it is also a testament to the community of Paulton who have supported it for all of these years."

Community groups in Paulton are working hard to make their village a better place to live. For example, Paulton In Bloom group (now Pride in Paulton Partnership to reflect the fact they are 'not just about flowers'), have begun organising village events, such as the Christmas Window Competition, held by traders, and now donating planters with flowers and bulbs. The community are also eagerly awaiting the opening of their newly-refurbished library, due in April, which is hoped will be a village hub for everyone to use.

The new Paulton Hospital League of Friends Charity shop is open from 9.30 a.m. – 12.45 p.m. and 2 – 4 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, it closes on Wednesdays and is open on Saturdays from 9.30 a.m. – 12.45 p.m. Paulton will certainly be hoping for another fourteen years from Terry and Caroline!
