A RATHER grainy photograph and a proper mystery this month. The label on the image does not seem to fit the evidence on the ground.

Have you seen the photograph before, or do you recognise where it is? If you do, please get in touch with the editor at [email protected] with any memories and for a mention in the Gazette.

Last month’s photograph was taken in the former Methodist Chapel in Bishop Sutton, now in use as a welcoming community space, including the very popular Chew Valley Library and cafe.

The pews were removed some years ago. The mural, painted as a WWI war memorial by local, and nationally known, artist Henry Strachey of Sutton Court, is still there, although behind curtains now. The murals in Stowey Church, which is currently benefitting from a grant to restore them, were also painted by him.

The Harptrees History Society , which provides these photos, is always interested in old pictures of people, places and events in the Chew Valley and Wrington area. If you have any you would like to share, please email [email protected]

The final event in the society’s programme of summer events will be a guided walk around the village of Blagdon on Wednesday, July 30 at 2pm. Contact the society as above for more details.
