CAN you guess where this week’s Mystery Photograph was taken?
Each week, the Journal invites readers to test their local knowledge by identifying a historic location from days gone by.
Last week’s Mystery Photograph was a little different, featuring the Radstock bus at Paulton (Number 88). While a few readers suggested the location might be Paulton High Street, we are confident it is definitely Paulton High Street, with the bus taking centre stage in this week’s historic image.

The Radstock Bus, Route 88, has been a significant part of the local transportation network, connecting Radstock to various destinations. Historically, the route has undergone several changes, including adjustments to its terminus and service frequency.
For instance, in 2016, the route was truncated to Radstock from its original Bristol to Bath service, and in 2022, it faced potential withdrawal due to operational challenges, though services were later retained under new management .
In the 1980s, Radstock's bus services saw a transformation with the introduction of minibus operations. In April 1985, Badgerline commenced a two-bus operation in Radstock/Midsomer Norton, marking the area's first minibus service. This initiative was part of a broader strategy to modernize and improve local bus services .
For those interested in exploring the history of local transport, Radstock Museum offers exhibits related to the town's industrial past, including displays on the Somerset Coal Canal and the Somerset and Dorset Joint Railway, which have influenced the region's development .
Paulton High Street serves as the main commercial and social hub of the village. It is lined with a mix of historic and more recent buildings, housing local shops, cafes, and services. The street functions as a centre for daily life and community activity, hosting both routine trade and occasional events. Its character reflects the combination of long-established structures and modern additions, providing a space for residents and visitors while illustrating the village’s development over time.
