CAN you guess where this week’s Mystery Photograph was taken?

Each week, the Journal invites readers to identify a historic location from days gone by.

Last week’s image proved that railway stations are a firm favourite.

Rosemary Burchill emailed in to say: “I think this photo is a short passenger steam train on the old BNS line as it arrives into Radstock.”

One of many suggestion online came from Malcolm Parnell: “Radstock West train bound for Frome; 5508 was a Frome allocated engine.”

Mystery Photograph regular Jeff Parsons emailed in to say: “This week is undoubtedly Radstock West (GWR) with a train from Bristol Temple Meads to Frome entering the station over the infamous level crossing.”

Let's hope this week's mystery photograph is a little easier to guess. Any ideas?
This nostalgic photo of Radstock West GWR Station prompted some great memories from our readers. (Radstock Museum)

We also had two guesses in to the office: Mr Tony Clarke called in to say it was Radstock Railway Station with the house in the background is now a shop called ‘Bike-It’ while Mr Jim Swift said it was Radstock Railway Station with a barbers shop built over the river in the background.

The correct answer is of course Radstock West GWR station.

Terry Reynolds wrote in to say: “Your mystery photograph brings back happy memories of bygone days.

“It always so exciting to embark on a train carriage being driven by a branch line GWR Prairie class side water tank steam locomotive engine no. 5508 or maybe it‘s no. 5608, at Radstock West station, as shown in your mystery photograph, then departing for Frome or Bristol Temple Mead, and I remember it was an enjoyable day out with family and friends.”

We’re glad it brought back fond memories for you, Terry and everyone else who enjoyed seeing it. Let’s see how we all get on with this week’s picture. Our thanks again go to Radstock Museum.
