EACH week, the Journal invites readers to test their knowledge by identifying a historic location from days gone by.

Last week we featured a picture supplied by Radstock Museum and were inundated with entries, including many guesses online, most identifying the same location.

Paul Hancock was the first to email in to [email protected]. He guessed: “This week’s photo is Farmborough… the photo was taken from outside of what was the Bell Inn.”

Terry Reynolds contacted us also to say: “The photograph location is the hill with the speed camera on Bath Road going through Farmborough.”

Tim Waite wrote in and agreed: “I think the picture is of Bell Hill in Farmborough now part of the A39. The former Bell Inn can be partly seen on the left of the photo. I think it closed in the 1960s,” while Elaine Pannifer wrote in to say: “It’s Bell Hill, Farmborough (A39).”

Can you guess the location of this mystery photograph supplied by Radstock Museum is?
The old Bell Inn in Farmborough proved to be a popular Mystery Photograph. (Radstock Museum)

We also had some correct late guesses by Jeff Parsons who said: “I think that this week you may be in Farmborough looking down the A39 by the junction with Hunstrete Road,” and Jeremy Smith who said: “I believe this week’s mystery photo is of the A39 at Farmborough. It would be interesting to know what date.”

You’ve guessed it, the correct answer is indeed the Bell Inn and the Bath Road in Farmborough. Well done to all our readers who guessed correctly.

But like many old postcards, this one unfortunately doesn’t include a date but from the more than 20 guesses online, one reader suggested the picture looked very much like the Farmborough he knew from the 1950s.

Our thanks again go to Radstock Museum for the latest supply of Mystery Photographs including this week’s.
