The Olympic's Opening Ceremony night was celebrated at Mardons Social Club with Will Stevenson bringing along the Torch he carried.
Members and guests were given the opportunity to hold and get photographed with the Torch in return for a small donation. Will has been raising funds with the Torch for the Smith Magenis Foundation and would like to thank everyone who contributed towards the sum of £220 on the night – his fund overall is heading for a magnificent £2,000.
The Social Club would like to say a big thank you to the members of the 2Rs Carnival Club, who have been raising much-needed funds for their club by managing the BBQ facilities at the Social Club throughout the summer.
Another proud Olympic's connection with the Social Club is Committee Member, Glyn Pearce, who has now completed his duties as a Gamesmaker. Glyn was one of tens of thousands of volunteers who gave up their own time to provide essential services at the Games without which the Olympics simply could not have happened. He described it as a wonderful experience meeting amazing people. The public, the competitors and even the Prime Minister have all been quick to recognise the contribution made by the Gamesmakers and to thank them all for their efforts – well done Glyn!
