Storm Ciara hit local towns and villages heavily from last weekend, as a thousand properties were without power in Somerset, 104 of which were in Peasedown St John on Sunday.
Two local Secondary Schools have had to close until Thursday (at the time of writing) due to damage caused by Storm Ciara. Alun Williams, Executive Headteacher and CEO of the Midsomer Norton Schools’ Partnership, said: “Following the storm over the weekend, there has been significant damage to the roof covering of Writhlington Secondary School.
“This has affected a large number of classrooms and therefore, the decision was taken to close both Mendip Studio School and Writhlington School sites from Monday, 10th February.
“Unfortunately, both schools are remaining closed on Wednesday, 12th February whilst contractors continue to assess the safety of the site and begin the necessary interim repairs.
“It is likely that a full repair will not be possible for some months.
“We are continuing to keep parents and carers updated and work for students is being set via Google Classroom.”
The school tweeted on Tuesday afternoon, saying: “Repairs have been hampered by continuing poor weather conditions. School opens at normal time on Thursday, 13th February for all students.”
If it was not enough to be battling 60mph winds and torrential rain, there have been hundreds of reports of fallen trees across the UK.
On Monday, B&NES Council tweeted: “We have been kept busy at various locations around the district since 2 a.m. dealing with fallen trees.”
In a later tweet, they told the public: “The worst of Storm Ciara might have passed, but we are still dealing with lots of fallen trees. We are currently clearing 69 incidents and have prioritised keeping all major routes open.”
A Midsomer resident took to social media site, posting a video of the extreme weather and commenting: “Midsomer Norton, unbelievable wind and rain. Frightening.”
Joy Dando, from Radstock, sent The Journal a photograph of a fallen tree (see front page) that was disrupting access to residents’ homes.
Just when we thought the weather was starting to settle, the Met Office have announced a follow-up storm for the weekend, bringing us gales and heavy rain, with a yellow wind warning. Batten down the hatches for Storm Dennis!
